THE HOLY SOONORO

ST. MARY'S JACOBITE SYRIAN CHURCH, NAIGAON

Our Church is blessed to have with the Soonoro of the Holy Mother Mary.

According to historical accounts, when Mother Mary breathed for last, the apostles came to know of Her demise through Holy Spirit. On th third day Her body was lifted to the heavens by angels on a chariot of fire.

St. Thomas, the Apostle who witnessed the ascension of Mother Mary, cried to the Holy Mother to grant

him a proof that he had witnessed the event. The chariot paused for a moment and responding to his petition the waistband (Girdle) and veil (mukasheela) fell into the hands of the Apostle.

St. Thomas carried these sacred objects to our motherland, India, which performed many miracles.

After he died as a martyr here, these invaluable gifts were interred with him.

In 394 AD, together with his coffin the Sacred Girdle was also moved from India to Uraha (also known as Edessa, in turkey) and then to Horns in Syria where it was kept very piously in a Church.

The Church where the Sacred girdle was preserved came to be known as the Church of Girdle (Soonoro

Church). The Holy Soonoro was later minutely examined by many archeologists and experts and they

vouched for its genuineness and legitimacy.

In our church, a small part of the holy Soonoro is obtained from the Malankara Church, by the Metropolitan of Mumbai Diocese H. G. Kuriakose Mor Eusebius. The Holy Soonoro was installed in our church on September 01, 2012.

The holy Soonoro casket is unveiled for public veneration once in a year on Sept 01 and kept open during the feast of ‘Ettunombu’ (8 days lent).

On the last day of the lent, the casket containing the soonoro is taken out of the shrine, giving devotees an opportunity for viewing and veneration and to seek blessing, after which it is closed again.

Hundreds of people irrespective of their religion flock to our church to receive the blessings of Mother Mary.
